AI Companion Privacy: What Happens to Your Conversations?

A deep dive into how AI companion apps handle your personal data, what risks to watch for, and which apps respect your privacy.

People tell their AI companion things they'd never say out loud to another person — that's the whole appeal. But behind that friendly voice is a server, a company, and a privacy policy almost nobody reads. So what actually happens to those conversations?

Most apps store and process your chats on their servers, and many use that data to keep training the model — your late-night venting session can quietly become training material. Several major apps also disclose that human reviewers may read conversations for safety moderation, and none in this category currently offer full end-to-end encryption, so in theory, staff could access messages if needed.

Some apps do handle this better than others. Pi and Nomi AI are consistently flagged as the more privacy-conscious choices, with real data export, deletion tools, and clearer retention limits. Kindroid stands out for encrypted private chats and not training on your conversations. Apps that run on advertising, or ship with a one-page privacy policy, tend to have far less incentive to protect what you share.

Open the privacy policy of whatever app you're using right now and search it for "delete," "train," and "share." Five minutes now beats finding out the hard way later.
